Also worth knowing about is the John D. Rockefeller Jr Memorial Parkway P [map], a strip of land between Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks. Although officially national forest land, this scenic 82-mile (132km) corridor is managed by the National Park Service. It has many of the same values as the adjacent national parks and deserves the same protection.

Touring Grand Teton, visitors have a choice of two main roads. US 89 goes from Jackson to Moran, where it meets US 287 from Dubois, before continuing north to Yellowstone. Most of this route follows the flat, sage-covered terraces above the Snake River, affording superb views of the Tetons. This road is usually chosen by people in a hurry, which is not to say that you can’t drive it slowly. Numerous pullouts allow for stopping. Look for antelope and coyote along the way and, in the fall, elk. If you visit on an early fall morning or evening, be sure to walk away from the car for a little distance and listen for bull elk bugling challenges to each other. This eerie, passionate sound, coupled with the crisp, sharp bite of fall air, is one of the Rockies’ most powerful and lasting experiences.
